Percutaneous Transhepatic Biliary Drainage (PTBD) is a specialized procedure used to diagnose and treat obstructions in the bile ducts. This technique involves pinpointing the location of the blockage and inserting a temporary catheter through the liver to safely drain excess bile, relieving pressure and symptoms.

In accordance with standard cancer care protocols, PTBD is considered the primary intervention for managing malignant biliary obstructions, especially those occurring above the level of the common hepatic duct.
